Next meetings

The Study Group started in the autumn of 1980 and was initiated by Brendan Kindlon after a visit to Dublin to attend a lecture by Harry Gelfont. He advised some colleagues to go to see him in London and everybody came back full of fresh enthusiasm after the inspirational talk. The bulk of the original membership was recruited from the client list of Broughton Tyrrell Laboratory.

Geoffrey Longson, who organised the Harry Gelfont lectures kindly offered to mentor the group in the first year. The prospective members were split into two groups and travelled to Geoff's Harley Street Practice on Wednesdays and Fridays where members were introduced to hydrocolloid impressions, Denar articulators and precision attachments.

Gradually the group consolidated as members fell away and was reduced to thirty, meeting on the second Thursday of the month with a summer break for July and August. Geoff remained a member until his recent retirement and we all owe him a great debt. He is currently our only Honorary Member.

George Dunbar was the first chairman and in fact was the only one who was chairman twice. Bertha Bates has been the secretary since the start of the Club. Meetings were held at the Broughton Tyrrell Laboratories for about 20 years and the first dinners were held at The Hatchet in Newbury market place, followed by the Regency Hotel in Thatcham and presently The Donnington Valley Hotel.

Membership

Membership is restricted to thirty Full Members, but as members retire from dentistry they are allowed to stay on as Retired Members. New members are introduced by means of nomination by current Full members and there has always been a fairly long waiting list.

Aims

Newbury Study Group is a group of local dentists who meet regularly through meetings and social interaction to discuss, share and acquire knowledge and experience about dental practice.
